Eszter Némethi

An Oracle of the Real
An oracle is usually asked to predict the future. This oracle does not do that.

This performance has emerged from a collection of stories that Eszter Némethi has compiled as part of her project 'An Oracle of the Real'. For this project, she spoke with artists, teachers, activists and social scientists from across Europe. By listening closely to all these voices, she has brought an oracle to life.

This oracle hails from the underworld of the Carpathian region, where she was trained as a ‘tudós’ (a kind of sage). She is sharp, sometimes ironic and forgetful. As a result, she cannot speak of the future, but focuses instead on how our current reality feels: complex, fractured and full of different perspectives.

During Beyond the Black Box, the oracle brings these collected stories to life. Visitors can take part in short, personal conversations. Questions you bring with you or discover together open up a space for listening, remembering and imagining. The experience is at once a performance, a conversation and a ritual. The work explores how, together, through attention and language, we can reshape our reality.

Performances until 6:00 PM are individual one-on-one sessions. From 7:00 PM onwards, performances take place in small groups of up to 6 people.
